Ring Care – 10 Top Tips

1.) Remove your rings before washing dishes, applying cosmetics or hairspray, manual work such as gardening or taking part in sports. This will prevent physical damage to the rings and prevent build up of grease or chemicals on any gemstones.

2.) Do not use ultrasonic cleaners to clean rings with gemstones, they may loosen the gemstones from their settings. Diamonds in a ring can be cleaned by soaking the ring in vodka then rinsing in warm water (plug the sink drain hole first!) and drying with a soft lint-free cloth.

3.) To clean stubborn deposits and dirt from a diamond ring, use a soft toothbrush that has been immersed in vodka. Giving the ring a soak in the vodka should make it easier get rid of grease, soap and dirt.

4.) Be sure not to use things like paper towels for polishing your rings, they can actually scratch the ring metal. It is a better idea to use a specially-made polishing cloth because it will give you a good shine without making any microscopic scratches on your ring.

5.) It’s a good idea to get into the habit of removing your rings before you go into wet areas like pools, saunas, the shower or the bath. Water on the ring surface acts as a trap for dust and causes a film to form which reduces the sparkle and shine of the ring.

9.) Those rings which have a plating such as gold plate on silver sometimes get a bit worn over the years when the plating metal wears off. Looking after these rings carefully will extend their life, and re-plating of the ring is an option.

10.) Household products for cleaning may weaken rings made from gold, and the chlorine which is found in hot tubs and pools can have the same effect. It’s best to either wear rubber protective gloves before coming in contact with these products or to remove the rings first.
