Most pearls are harvested after nine to sixteen months. One reason the South Sea pearl grows to such a large size is because it is allowed to grow for at least two years. Cultivation of South Sea pearls is a high tech operation. Highly trained technicians implant the nucleus into oysters, and the process begins. During the growth period the oysters are pampered and watched carefully to make sure growth will be optimal. Many South Sea pearls will grow for up to six years before they are harvested.
After they are harvested, pearls are sorted and then put through a grading process. Pearls that are not perfect are separated from the perfect gems, allowing only the best to be sent to market. Perhaps the most difficult process is matching. Pearls are matched by their size and their shape, which will create the perfect strand.
Technology plays a big role in pearl cultivation, but the most important work is produced by nature. Colors, sizes and shapes will vary in South Sea pearls. Produced in two kinds of oysters, one being the gold-lipped and the other silver-lipped, South Sea pearls will also vary in color depending on where the farm is located.
